Why I’m Learning to Lead with Respect

For a long time, I thought respect had to be earned, or that it was only for people in authority. But life (and God) has been teaching me something different. Respect isn’t just about titles or status; it’s about how we treat everyone, even when it’s hard. I’ve learned that when I lead with humility, listen with care, and speak with gentleness, I make space for God to work through me. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. Holy Focus is part of that journey for me, and hopefully for you too.

Matthew 7:12

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

The golden rule is rooted in mutual respect. If we wouldn’t want to be dismissed, dishonored, or belittled, we shouldn’t do that to others either.

Hebrews 13:17

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.”

Prayer

Lord, Help me see people the way You do. Teach me to respect others not just with my words, but with my heart and actions. When pride rises up in me, remind me that humility is holy. When it’s hard to honor someone, give me strength to choose love anyway. Let my life reflect Your kindness, even in difficult conversations. Shape me into someone who brings dignity into every room I enter. Amen.

Conclusion

Respect is a form of love, never a weakness.

We learn through Scripture that when we honor others, we honor God himself.

These verses invite you to have a deeper relationship with God and others.

Let it open up to gentler conversations and a more fulfilling life.

We live a little more like Jesus when we treat others with dignity.

Let your life be guided by the Word, one respectful act at a time.

  1. These passages reminded me that respect is biblical. We don’t get to choose who we respect and don’t. Respect starts not only with family members we agree with, but also those we have disagreements with. I needed this today. There are some people whom I find hard to love. I’m asking God to help me have more patience and understanding so I can honor Him. I feel like people get divided more with each passing day.

  2. 1 Peter 2:17 hit me hard. It’s not easy to show proper respect to everyone. I’ve learned to tune out the people that I’ve been frustrated with. These verses helped me realize that I’ve become something I swore I wouldn’t be: cold like my father. He was an expert in ignoring people he was mad at. Respect, after all, isn’t all about agreeing. It’s about taking the time to see what God sees in others. I have some things to repent for.

  3. As a high school teacher, respect is something I try to teach my students. I show it to them even when I don’t get it in return all the time. These verses made me see it more clearly. Respect is not just about manners, it has to come from your heart guided by God’s Word. I’ll be printing these out and I have downloaded the app! I’m navigating through it, and it has been very helpful. This was what I needed to see today.
