In today’s world, we are constantly overwhelmed with choices. Which job to take, which voice to listen to, which direction to walk in. But not every open door is from God. That’s why discernment matters. Discernment involves being prayerfully attentive. It entails learning to filter decisions not just through what is popular or convenient, but through God's truth and timing. While some people may have a natural gift for discernment, everyone can develop spiritual discernment by taking time to seek the Lord. Here are five ways to enhance your discernment and walk in wisdom when everything seems unclear.

In 2025, everyone has something to say, but not all voices are trustworthy. AI-generated opinions, influencer “truths,” and information overload make it harder than ever to tune into what God is actually saying. That’s why discernment is more than a nice-to-have, it’s a spiritual survival skill.

Start with Surrender, Not Strategy

Before embarking on any plan, take a moment to open your heart and mind to the divine. Inviting God into your process, ask earnestly, “What do You want me to see in this situation?” True discernment blossoms when you courageously set aside your personal desires and expectations. When you fully surrender to God’s will, rather than simply seeking His approval for your own ambitions, you will find that His guidance illuminates your path with greater clarity and insight.

Let’s talk about spiritual discernment.

Discerning God’s will can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions and opinions compete for attention. How do you usually seek clarity?

Test Everything by the Word

God’s voice is filled with unwavering truth and will always align with His Word. If a thought or feeling seems reassuring but contradicts Scripture, it does not come from Him. Cultivate the habit of examining every idea, invitation, or subtle urging through the perspective of the Bible. Your discernment will grow when you embrace divine truth instead of just relying on your own thoughts.

Use Holy Focus to Block Out the Noise

One of the biggest enemies of discernment is distraction. With social media, countless opinions, YouTube sermons, and TikTok theology, it can all become overwhelming. The Holy Focus app helps to reduce this digital clutter by blocking distracting apps and replacing them with brief, guided prayer prompts. This provides a simple way to refocus your attention on God and listen to Him more clearly.

Pay Attention to Peace and Pressure

God often whispers to our hearts through the gentle embrace of peace. If a decision feels like it’s being thrust upon you, hurried and heavy with anxiety, take a moment to pause and breathe. Even when the road ahead is rugged and full of obstacles, God offers a profound peace that defies understanding, a serene presence that calms the storm within. Reflect on your feelings: “Am I sensing God’s guiding presence in this moment, or am I simply succumbing to the weight of pressure to act?”

Clarity Didn’t Always Come Easy for Me

There were times I’d overthink every decision, paralyzed by fear of missing God’s will. But over time, I learned discernment is about being close. God isn’t hiding His will. He just speaks most clearly when I’m quiet enough to listen. That’s why I built Holy Focus, to help myself and others quiet the noise so we can hear the One voice that matters most.

Ask the Right People, Not Just People

Discernment is a journey that is best undertaken with the company of others, but it is essential to choose your companions wisely. Surround yourself with individuals whose spiritual maturity shines like a guiding light, people who will pause to pray fervently before offering their words. Instead of simply soliciting opinions, delve deeper by seeking out the treasure of wisdom they can provide. The voices you invite into your life have the power to either illuminate your path with clarity or cast a shadow that clouds your spiritual insight. Choose wisely, for these are the echoes that will shape your understanding and guide your decisions.

Conclusion

Discernment is more about developing a close, quiet relationship with God. As you cultivate trust, surrender, and a grounding in Scripture, clarity will emerge, not all at once, but just enough for you to take each step. You don’t need to be 100% certain to make a move. You just need to be willing to walk by faith. God honors a heart that listens, even when the steps you take are small. Do not rush the clarity that comes from the Spirit. He is not trying to confuse you. He is guiding you with love.
