At some point in everybody's life, the question comes up: "What is my calling?" Maybe it's your first time trying to figure it out, or you've been feeling like you've strayed away from your path. In either case, life's distractions - busyness, doubt, fears, and comparison - can blur the clarity in our hearts. But God has a purpose for our lives that's meaningful and unique. Your calling isn't random, it's rooted in your identity as a child of God. These five steps will help you focus on your calling with courage and clarity.

Clarify Who You’re Listening To

When you don’t know your calling, it’s tempting to listen to everyone else. But God’s voice should be louder than public opinion, family pressure, or social media noise. Spend time in prayer, in Scripture, and in silence. Ask Him directly: “Lord, what do You want to do through me?” Start by tuning into the One who designed you.

Be Faithful With What’s in Front of You

You don’t have to wait for a perfect opportunity to step into your calling. Often, it begins with what’s already in your hands, a job, a ministry, a friendship, a burden. Luke 16:10 says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” When you’re faithful in the small things, God will expand your reach.

Stop Comparing Your Calling to Someone Else’s

Comparison will kill your focus. It’s easy to feel behind or unqualified when you’re looking sideways. But your calling is handcrafted for you, not copied from someone else. Galatians 6:4 reminds us to test our own actions, not compete with others. Stay in your lane. God’s plan for you is just as significant, even if it looks different.

When I Didn’t Know What I Was Called to Do

There were years when I felt completely lost. I kept asking God what my purpose was, but all I heard was silence. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t lacking a calling, I was just too distracted to recognize it. When I began praying more consistently, journaling my desires, and letting go of comparison, I started hearing Him more clearly. That’s part of why I created Holy Focus: to help others get quiet enough to hear God’s voice and bold enough to follow it.

Move Forward With Courage, Not Certainty

Sometimes the only way to confirm your calling is to take a step. You won’t have all the answers, but you will have God’s presence. Trust that He goes before you, and let obedience lead the way. Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Focus on the next right step, not the entire map.
